Cleaning a sugar glider's cage

Always make sure to remove any uneaten foods from the previous day and wipe down any little messes they may have made in the cage with a sponge.  I use a wet sponge or rag with a bit of white vinegar on it.  It will help kill any germs, not pets. Also, I have used a few drops of lavender essential oil (not fragrance) into a spray bottled filled with water. It's safe for the animals, provides a refreshing smell. Studies indicate that lavender is not only safer, but more effective at killing germs than many of the known harsh household chemicals.

Cages can be cleaned with white vinegar.  It is best to have a cage with a pullout tray.   This way, they don’t have to walk in their own feces or urine.  I currently use plain newspaper in the trays with a sprinkling of baking soda to help with odor control.  Males who are not neutered will have a musky smell.  This helps keep the odor down. You may also use a product called "Carefresh" in the cage. It's safe and easy to use. I also use a very small ion air purifer in their room. It was purchased for $15.95 at Home Depot and works pretty well. Larger, better quality units could be used as well.

Every so often, on nice days, I will take the entire cage outdoors and spray it down with a hose for good measure.  I of course, remove my pets from it, placing them in an extra cage, until the regular cage is dry.

Just remember, cleaning is a very good way to keep your animals healthy.  Regular weekly or bi-weekly cleanings are recommended.

You don’t have to worry about bathing your gliders.  They keep their coats very clean like a little cat.  Many times I have peeked inside their box during the day.  I will see a whole clan of gliders grooming each other and making themselves and their cage mates “pretty.” When grooming, gliders will make a little sneezing sound that is perfectly normal.

One tip I do have about keeping the "piggy" messes down when they eat, is by investing in a $7 plastic cake cover from Sterilite at the department store.

My husband has an inexpenisve tool he attaches to his drill that makes a hole in two sides large enough for the gliders to pass through. I then take some sandpaper and smooth out the edges to make sure it's safe for the gliders to enter in and out.

The food dishes are placed inside this "kitchen" each night. This helps to contain the little messes they make each night inside the kitchen. I then take it out with the food dishes each night. You can either through them in the dishwasher or hand wash them too rather than washing your walls, floors and curtains.
